Positive vs. Negative incentives

I was wondering how people respond to different incentives. For example, which would turn Oliver into a more prolific blogger: if I paid him, per post, some relevant sum or if I threatened to cut off a digit for every week he went without crossing some threshold for number and quality of blog posts?

    In the negative case, I’m guessing the likelihood of compliance would greatly increase after the first toe—on demonstration that you are serious. I say “toe” because typing with nine fingers is probably a little more difficult.

    I believe Frodo Baggins preferred video blogging.
